The facelifted Mustang is pretty much the best retro-muscle car. I lust over the Boss 302 but the 5.0 GT is a performance bargain and the 662HP Shelby is just bonkers. Prior to the facelift I think the Camaro and Challenger were better looking but post facelift I think the Mustang is clearly the best.

Gimme the SRT8. Enough room for the kids and enough go juice for Daddy.

I have naughty dreams of the SRT8's engine (with some adjustments) in the Mustang's body and suspension.

You can always buy a 5.0GT and then get the Boss 302 intake and suspension springs put on for less than the 302 MSRP probably.

I'm concerned by the lack of ZL1 love on display here

Apparently, no one loves the Camaro here.

Best looking retro is the Mustang. BUT, only up to 1968. After that the got too big IMHO.
Love the curent mustang and it has a much better interior

I don't like how all muscle cars got fatter either. It seems that whenever the world wants to update a cars design but keep its shape the same, we simply make it bigger.
Are you referring to the '15 IRS Mustang or '14 live-axle Mustang?
![]() 02/23/2014 at 15:30 |

Actually, if prefer to track the Camaro. The GT500 might have it in horsepower, but the ZL1 would be in the lead after 20 laps.

Somebody do it!

I'm surprised the Camaro is winning the Stigma pole. I know that it has the whole "mullet" thing, but that's not really the case with the new ones. I thought for sure the Mustang would take that for the fact that it's still then muscle of choice for women. (Not being derogatory, I like the Mustang, just saying)
![]() 02/23/2014 at 15:38 |

I drove a last-gen GT500, and that thing didn't handle for shit. Haven't driven a ZL1, but everything I've read says it's a legitimately great track car.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 15:45 |

I'm surprised that the Camaro is winning the Stigma poll as well! I think the Mustang should be winning it, and here's why:
Because of it's low price and attainability, anyone with the money, be it someone right out of college, in college, or has parents with huge pockets can get a lot of power, be it a V8 or V6(lol) for a low price. Hooning about and showing off your cheap muscle car to people who have seen it a dozen times already ensues, and things like this happen frequently:
(This last one reportedly got C&C cancelled in Charlotte NC)
Does this make sense? Mind you I actually like the Mustang :P

Z28 is the answer to each question!

Challanger is the ultimate DD, not sure why Mustang is currently neck and neck with it. The dodge can fit people in the back seats, has a HUGE trunk, and can still be had with a MT! (Only if you swing for a v8 though)
The mustang is the "ultimate" track car of the three.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 16:18 |
|
Daily Drive: Challenger - it's the cushiest of the three, has quite a bit of room inside, and is all around great for cruising
Track: Camaro - reviews have basically proven that this is the best American muscle car around a track versus any analogous Mustang or Challenger.
Has Stigma: Mustang - because everybody calls you a poser when you buy a Mustang since everybody has a Mustang.
Looks the Best: Challenger - seriously, the other two don't even come close to looking like their old-school namesakes and the current Challenger Shaker in orange is absolutely stunning. This is also the purest of the three in that it isn't even attempting to do anything high tech or modern and is basically pure engine. I love it.

This is the same thing I did for the same reasons
![]() 02/23/2014 at 16:22 |

But in terms of affordability, couldn't you say the same thing about Camaros? They're basically in the same price range. I guess the Mustang might have the edge since I assume there are more of them on the road (with the Camaro being offstage for nearly a decade), so in terms of sheer volume there's more total Mustang assholery out there.
I dunno — I voted Camaro (assuming the 2010+ models) purely for subjective reasons. I can't stand the look of them. They just look to me like brutish, cloddish hulks with little style or refinement even by muscle car standards. (I say this as a Mustang owner who also admires Challengers and old school Camaros.) So when I see one I tend to (unfairly, I know) assume the driver's a meathead.

Agreed. I dislike the Mustang stigma in that every high-school girl who wants a "cute" car inevitably buys a V6 mustang convertible, which to all intents and purposes looks nearly identical to the more grunty/expensive versions of the same.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 16:34 |

I personally like the new look of the Camaro, but that 10 year hiatus is probably what did it for the Camaro/Mustang ratio. But I do agree with your opinion on the looks of the Camaro. I think I understand where you're coming from as well.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 17:05 |

How is a V6 Mustang "cute"? How is a Mustang ever cute?
![]() 02/23/2014 at 17:09 |

I honestly have no idea, but it's the adjective of choice for the teenage girls that own them around here.

Weird. My high school usually had girls driving Minis, Fiestas, a couple Beetles and what ever cheap car they could find. Though, some rich ones had some SUVs and whatnot. Not one had a Mustang. Reckon it depends on location.

I come from a school where appearances are pretty much 80% of a person. Here's a short list of cars people I know have received as their first car:
Scion FR-S
2002 Mustang GT
2014 V6 Mustang
Porsche 914 (owner doesn't take care of it. Cracked exhaust manifold, timing is way off, sounds awful)
Porsche 944 (again, not very well maintained)
Several Corvette C2 stingrays
V6 Camaros abound
And of course the normal selection of slammed-to-their-balls Civics with gaudy graphics and a million degrees of camber.
![]() 02/23/2014 at 19:24 |
|
Just the fact that several c2 stingrays being driven by teenage(I'll assume that?) kids is astounding. Hope they're well taken care of. There seems to be an increase in younger drivers getting 944s and other such P-cars. Probably because they're being sold for cheap and they get them for the badge and don't realize how much maintenance they require. Can't imagine seeing a Camaro at my school.
Right now at my college I can remember seeing:
2013-14 Ford Mustang GT
2013 Mini Cooper S
Several 2012-2013 Ford Focus
2012 Chrysler 300
My 2008 Saturn Astra(soon to be replaced by a 2014 Focus ST)
2014 Ford Fiesta ST
Several 2011-2013 Chevy Cruze
A couple 2nd gen. Beetles
Chevy HHR
New Kia Sportage and Forte
Some old BMWs
My other friends 1986 Toyota Tercel
And the usual group of 80s-90s Hondas and Toyotas. What do you think of this?

What makes me really sad is that all of those cars I've listed are the first cars of 16 year olds who never have and never will track them, but probably wrap the RWD ones around a pole.
One of the Corvette owners, when asked what engine it had responded with "It's a V8... I think?" Luckily she's pretty. I weep for the car, though. It's got a hideous 2Fast 2Furious-style dragon vinyl put on it, too.
One guy recently totaled a Crown Vic when he tried to do a burnout, turn it into a donut, and ended up driving at 40mph into the hitch of a 5th-wheel trailer, tearing the top of the car off and giving him a huge gash in his arm. And he shoved the trailer a good 30 yards from where it was parked. This is par for the course at my school.
Another story: A freshman's parents gave him the keys to their SUV, into which he and three friends piled into and proceeded to drive 100mph on dirt roads. They hit an undulating section I am very familiar with, got scared, slammed on the brakes which immediately rolled the car and killed one of the kids.
And a guy with a Caddy STS with a Northstar V8 in it that would be in mint condition except for the messed up rear bumper which is from him INTENTIONALLY backing into the sides of parked Mustangs because he doesn't like Ford.
Sorry for the novel. I should make this its own post, lol.

The Camaro is undeniably the best track car

Make this a post and entitle it "Stupid drivers at my school! Poor cars :(" take pictures of all the cars and their drivers and their uneducated stories and we'll all gladly ridicule them lol. It'd be an interesting post IMHO. I feel bad for those corvettes especially now. We're they hand me downs or bought off used car lots? If the second option, then tell me where to go buy one!
![]() 02/23/2014 at 23:03 |

I believe they are hand-me-downs, but I happen to be blessed with a Craigslist that often has REALLY good deals (near-mint Fairlady Zs for $4000, or really clean 944s for cheap), but I've been cursed by no money.
I'll scrape together some pictures and try to make a decent post out of it. Maybe we could raise some money to buy some of these cars off of their neglectful owners and put them into my garage. I'll gladly wrench them back to smooth running order ;D
![]() 02/23/2014 at 23:28 |

There was an OK 944 for sale 15 minutes away from me for $900. I should've bought it and kept it secret from my dad, but my morals kept me from doing so. :P Maybe when I get more cash, I'll buy the cheapest classic I can find and slowly restore it then show it to him and impress him. ;D
We could make a "save the classics" fund depending on our locations. I'd seriously love to learn how to wrench a car if I have any time. I can't believe any sensible parent that had a C2 stingray or Porsche would even let their new, inexperienced driving kids drive such beautiful classics. :(

I genuinely like all three of these. I think they all look good, and would be happy to own any of them. The Challenger is a big cushy coupe. It reminds me of my mom's '84 Delta 88 coupe, a perfect DD. A Z/28 would be an amazing track toy. I think the Mustang might be the best compromise if you could only have one.
